RYA Sea Survival

This RYA course is for offshore race crews, cruising yachts, professional seafarers and commercial operators. It covers essential sea survival skills: if the worst ever happened at sea and you had to abandon your boat, would you know what to do?

Our RYA Sea Survival training course assumes the worst case scenario: that you have to abandon your yacht or ship. The Sea Survival course equips students with a grounding in core safety and survival techniques with some practical, hands-on demonstrations. Sea Survival Training is aimed at leisure yachtsmen and powerboaters as well as paid crew on vessels up to 3000GT. The RYA / MCA Sea Survival course is very popular among leisure and professional sailors and powerboaters and can be used as day 1 of the ISAF Offshore Safety Crew Course, which is required by offshore race crews competing in events such as the RORC Fastnet, AZAB, ARC, RBI and Sydney Hobart race.

COURSE DURATION:

The Sea Survival course takes one day (09.30 to 17.00) to complete and is run from our training centre in Southampton, making use of local swimming pools. As one of our most popular training courses, it runs most weekends and frequently during

the week. Please contact us if you would like to book the course on a specific date as we are happy to set up courses to accommodate individual needs wherever possible. If you want to complete the ful ISAF Offshore Safety Course then you will find we generally run an ISAF training day the day after our Sea Survival Courses.

PRE REQUISITES:

The RYA Sea Survival course is suitable for beginners and as such there are no pre-requisites, although a familiarity with boats is advantageous.

COURSE CONTENT:

Every yachtsman (power or sail) should attend this one day course. The emphasis of the RYA Sea Survival course is on using life-rafts and the day includes a two hour practical session in the pool, learning how to inflate, climb into, upright and survive in a life-raft. The course also covers a wide range of other survival issues, including helicopter rescue, immersion in cold water, and life jackets, as well as an outdoor practical demonstration by the instructor off a real distress flare.

We hope you never need to use the skills gained on this course, but strongly believe that if the worst ever happened and yours and your crew’s lives depended on it, this training will prove invaluable and will help to preserve life.

The RYA Sea Survival course is one of the requirements for anyone who would like to commercially endorse their MCA / RYA Yachtmaster or MCA / RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence. The Sea Survival Course also makes up half of the ISAF Offshore Race Crew Course.

WHY CHOOSE STORMFORCE COACHING FOR THIS COURSE?:
This is one of the most fun and enjoyable courses we teach and we work hard to make it as memorable as possible.

We want things to be as realistic as possible and don’t go for the boiler suit, tracksuit, or swimming costume approach that many of our competitors adopt. We strongly believe that you should experience what it is like climbing into a life raft wearing proper kit. During the classroom session you will have the opportunity to handle all of the items commonly found in a life raft as well as many other bits of equipment that are less common.

For the pool session we encourage everyone to wear foul weather gear or a dry suit.
For the pool session we issue everyone with a modern manual inflation horseshoe style lifejacket.
Our Instructor will demonstrate live firing of a distress flare
In addition to our regular Southampton courses we are prepared to travel to you, if more convenient.
